All things considered, it sounds like it could have been quite a bit worse. True, Amtrak's on board personnel could only communicate what they knew. But it sounds like they held up their end of the deal by ensuring your safety and comfort. They got the initial call of 3 or 4 hours right (it took 3:45), got you and your possessions to Albany where 49 was held, and handed out refreshments. I assume there were no misconnects in Chicago. But yeah, a rescue stub train from Albany, as the poster above suggests, would have been a nice luxury.

My wife and I were on train 49 waiting for you in Albany. We also got stories that varied from hour to hour. The number of busses grew from one to two to three and their estimated time of arrival kept getting later and later.
Here's some thoughts:
1. Amtrak should improve emergency training for all on board personnel including the importance of providing timely and accurate information to passengers.
2. Amtrak should send generous travel vouchers to all the passengers affected.
3. If the derailment was due to faulty track (most likely, I believe), CSX should reimburse Amtrak for all accident related expenses and possibly be fined for inadequate track maintenance. It is interesting to look at the CSX web page where you will find that their vision is "To be the safest, most progressive North American railroad, relentless in the pursuit of customer and employee excellence." Hmmmm.
4. Congress should find enough extra money for poor Amtrak so that there is enough rolling stock on hand so that they could have sent out an extra short train to take you all to Albany. It would have been a lot faster!

At least they let you off the train and allowed you to take pictures (which are excellent, by the way).

The fact that no one was hurt is a great blessing.

Those Inco shots are great I made one of them into my wall paper.
How did you get those shots and do you have any other industrial shots.
